How much you start with decides what kind of phone business you build. GHC 10,000 and GHC 50,000 are both real starting points, but they lead to very different shops. Here are two example plans side by side, so you can see what each budget buys and which suits you.
The two plans at a glance
| Plan A: GHC 10,000 | Plan B: GHC 50,000 | |
|---|---|---|
| Business model | Accessories kiosk or small space | Phone and accessories shop |
| Main stock | Chargers, cables, earphones, cases, screen guards, power banks | Budget and mid-range phones plus a full accessories range |
| Risk | Low: small, fast-moving items | Higher: more cash tied up in phones |
| Margin | Higher percentage per item | Lower percentage on phones, more cedis per sale |
| Customer trust | Builds slowly | A “real shop” earns trust faster |
| Best for | First-timers, part-time owners, testing a location | People with some retail experience or a proven location |
Plan A: GHC 10,000 accessories start
Most of the money goes into fast-moving accessories, with a small rent and setup cost and a reserve kept back. We break this budget down line by line in the best business to start in Ghana with GHC 10,000. The goal is to sell, learn what your area buys, and grow from profit.
Plan B: GHC 50,000 phone and accessories shop
An example of how the money might be split. Your figures will depend on your town, so get real quotes before you commit.
| Item | Example amount (GHC) |
|---|---|
| Rent advance (6 months) | 6,000 |
| Shop fit-out and security | 6,000 |
| Signboard | 1,000 |
| Registration and permit | 500 |
| Phone stock | 25,000 |
| Accessories stock | 7,000 |
| MoMo line, business phone, receipt books | 500 |
| Reserve for running costs | 4,000 |
| Total | 50,000 |
Notice the rent advance: six months, not two years. Under Ghana’s Rent Act, landlords should not collect more than six months in advance for longer tenancies. Read the rent advance trap before you negotiate.
Which plan should you choose?
- Choose Plan A if this is your first business, you’re testing a location, or you want to keep your job while you start.
- Choose Plan B if you’ve sold phones before, you have a location with proven foot traffic, and you can keep a reserve after stocking.
- The middle path: start with Plan A, then add phones from profit. Many successful shops grew this way.
Whichever you choose, the same rules apply: buy from trusted distributors, stock what sells fast, and price for real profit.
