Your supplier decides your price, your quality and your reputation. One bad batch of fake phones can sink a new shop. Here are the three main ways Ghanaian phone shops source stock.
Option 1: Official distributors and authorised dealers
Tecno has an official distributor in Ghana that supplies dealers and retail shops across the country, with official after-sales support through Carlcare. Buying from official or authorised channels means genuine phones, proper warranty cards, and fewer customer complaints. The trade-off: you may face minimum orders and tighter margins.
Option 2: Wholesale markets
Many shops buy from wholesalers in big phone trading areas such as Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra or Adum in Kumasi. Prices can be attractive, but quality varies widely. This is also where much fake and refurbished stock enters the market, so test every single unit.
Option 3: Importing accessories
Once your shop is running, importing accessories directly from manufacturers, for example from China through a trusted agent, can greatly improve your margins. Start small and add shipping, customs duty, and clearing costs before you calculate your profit.
How to vet a new supplier
- Visit their shop or warehouse in person before paying big money.
- Start with a small test order.
- Test every phone in the test order: IMEI, specs, battery, camera and charging.
- Ask other shop owners about their reputation.
- Get receipts for everything.
- Never pay in full for goods you have not seen, especially online.
