“How much money do I need?” is the first question most people ask before starting a phone business. The honest answer: it depends on the model you choose. Here are three realistic ways to start.
Option 1: Accessories only (roughly GHS 5,000 to GHS 15,000)
Start with chargers, cables, cases, screen protectors, earphones and power banks. You can begin from a small kiosk, a table in a busy area or even a WhatsApp-only store. This is the lowest-risk start, with high margins and fast-moving stock.
Option 2: Phones and accessories (roughly GHS 20,000 to GHS 60,000 or more)
A proper shop with new phones from trusted brands and a full accessories range. Customers trust a “real” phone shop more, but more of your cash is tied up in phone stock.
Option 3: Phones, accessories and repairs
Everything in Option 2, plus repair tools, spare parts and a trained technician. Repairs bring customers back again and again.
What your budget must cover
- Shop rent (often 1 to 2 years paid in advance)
- Shop fitting: glass counter, shelves, lighting, signage
- Phone and accessories stock
- Business registration and permits
- Security: burglar-proof bars, padlocks, CCTV
- Equipment: MoMo phone, receipt book, power backup
- Marketing: signboard, flyers, WhatsApp Business setup
- An emergency reserve of at least one month’s running costs
The rule most beginners break
Do not spend all your capital on stock. Rent, light bills, transport and slow months will come, and a shop with no reserve closes fast.
These ranges are planning guides. Always get real quotes for rent and stock in your own town.
