“Will they approve me?” That’s the worry many people have before asking about phone financing. The good news: in Ghana, qualifying is much easier than getting a bank loan. You usually don’t need collateral, and many plans don’t need a payslip.
Here’s what providers typically ask for, why they ask, and how to put yourself in the best position.
The Basic Requirements
Every seller sets its own rules, but these are the most common.
1. A Ghana Card
The Ghana Card is the main ID for financial services in Ghana. Sellers use it to confirm who you are and to protect both of you. Make sure your card is valid and that the name matches your MoMo account.
2. A mobile money account in your name
Most phone financing in Ghana runs on MoMo. You’ll typically need an MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash or AT Money account registered in your own name and linked to your Ghana Card.
3. An active phone number
The seller needs to be able to reach you with payment reminders and receipts.
4. Age 18 or above
You need to be an adult to sign a credit agreement.
5. A deposit
Almost every plan asks for a first payment before you take the phone. Having your deposit ready shows you’re serious, and a bigger deposit can make approval easier and the instalments smaller.
Extra Requirements for Some Plans
Bigger or longer plans, especially for premium phones, may also ask for:
- Proof of income – a payslip, appointment letter, or for traders, a history of regular MoMo transactions
- A guarantor – someone who agrees to back your payments
- Proof of address – such as a digital address (GhanaPost GPS)
- References – people who can confirm who you are
6 Ways to Improve Your Chances (and Get Better Terms)
- Use your MoMo actively, in your own name. A steady history of money coming in shows you can handle regular payments.
- Save a bigger deposit. The more you pay upfront, the less risk for the seller and the smaller your instalments.
- Choose a phone that matches your income. Asking for a GH₵14,000 flagship on a small daily income is likely to be refused. A phone like the Samsung Galaxy A07s or Infinix Hot 70 is much easier to get approved for.
- Keep your details consistent. Your Ghana Card, MoMo name and the name you give the seller should all match.
- Clear any old debts first. Unpaid MoMo loans or past missed payments can count against you.
- Be honest about your income. It’s better to get a plan you can keep up with than one that gets your phone locked in month two.

What to Bring When You Apply
Before you visit or contact the seller, have these ready:
- Your Ghana Card
- The MoMo number you’ll pay from (registered in your name)
- Your deposit
- Proof of income, if you have it
- The name of the phone you want and its cash price
