A customer recently told us a roadside seller had offered him a phone “with 32GB RAM” for a price that sounded too good to be true. He wanted to know if he was missing out by buying a “16GB” phone instead. Here’s the honest answer, and it might save you a few hundred cedis.
First, the Truth About Big RAM Numbers
Most phones sold in Ghana have between 4GB and 12GB of real (physical) RAM. Top flagships go up to about 12–16GB. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, one of the most powerful phones you can buy, has 12GB in its 256GB version.
So where do “16GB RAM” and “32GB RAM” come from? Usually from extended RAM, also called virtual RAM. Tecno and Infinix call it Memory Fusion, and Samsung calls it RAM Plus.
How extended RAM works
The phone takes a chunk of your storage and treats it as extra RAM. A box might say:
- “8GB RAM” = 4GB physical + 4GB extended (like the Tecno Pop 20)
- “8GB RAM” = 3GB physical + 5GB extended (like the itel A200)
- “16GB RAM” = 8GB physical + 8GB extended
Storage is much slower than real RAM. Extended RAM helps keep a few more apps “parked” in the background, but it doesn’t make the phone faster the way real RAM does. It also uses up storage you could have kept for photos and videos.
There’s nothing dishonest about extended RAM when it’s labelled clearly, as it is on those phones. The problem is sellers who only quote the big total.
Bottom line: when comparing phones, look at the physical RAM. A phone with 8GB of real RAM beats one advertised as “16GB” if that’s really 4GB + 12GB extended.
Is 16GB (Total) RAM Enough?
For almost everyone, yes. Often 8GB of real RAM is already more than enough.
What 8GB of physical RAM handles easily
- WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok all open together
- MoMo and banking apps
- Google Meet or Zoom calls
- Light to moderate gaming (eFootball, Free Fire, Candy Crush)
- Editing photos and short videos
When you’d want 12GB or more of physical RAM
- Serious mobile gaming on high settings
- Heavy video editing on the phone
- Keeping 15 or more apps open and switching constantly
Even then, 12GB is the practical ceiling for real-world use today.
Do You Need 32GB of RAM on a Phone?
No. Mainstream phones don’t come with that much real RAM, and nothing a typical user does needs it.
If someone offers you a “32GB RAM” phone at a cheap price, be careful. It’s usually one of these:
- A phone with a lot of extended RAM and modest real RAM
- A fake or cloned phone that reports false specs
- A mix-up where the seller means 32GB storage, which is very little these days
How to check before you pay
- Go to Settings > About phone and look at RAM. On Samsung, also check Settings > Device care > Memory.
- Install a trusted app like CPU-Z from the Play Store to see the real specs.
- Buy from a shop that gives you a receipt and warranty.
At Simcel Ventures, every phone is genuine and brand new, and our product pages show the real RAM, with any extended RAM labelled separately.
What About Laptops? 16GB vs 32GB
Many people searching this question are actually buying a laptop. Quickly:
- 8GB: basic schoolwork, browsing and Microsoft Office
- 16GB: the sweet spot for most students, office work and light design
- 32GB: only needed for professional video editing, 3D work, large programming projects or heavy gaming
For laptops too, 16GB is enough for the vast majority of users.
Where Your Money Is Better Spent
Instead of chasing big RAM numbers, put your budget into:
- Enough storage. 128GB minimum, 256GB if you can.
- A big battery. 5,000mAh or more for dumsor days, plus a good power bank.
- A decent camera if you sell online or create content.
- Protection. A quality case, screen protector and an original fast charger. Cheap chargers damage batteries over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is extended RAM the same as real RAM?
No. Extended RAM uses part of your storage and is much slower. It helps a little with keeping apps open, but physical RAM is what really affects speed.
Should I turn off extended RAM?
If your storage is nearly full, reducing or turning off extended RAM frees up space. On a phone with plenty of storage, leaving it on is fine.
Is 8GB RAM enough for gaming?
Yes, for most popular mobile games. Serious gamers who play on the highest settings may prefer 12GB.
Is 16GB RAM enough for a laptop?
Yes, for students, office workers and most creatives. You only need 32GB for heavy professional work like 4K video editing or 3D rendering.
