Do I Need More RAM or More Storage? A Phone Buyer’s Guide for Ghana

“Storage full” pops up every time someone sends a video to your family WhatsApp group. Or your phone takes forever to switch from MoMo to WhatsApp and back. Customers ask us every week which of these two problems they have, and the answer decides whether you spend GH₵1,800 or GH₵4,000 on your next phone.

RAM and Storage Are Not the Same Thing

A seller may say “128 gig” and “8 gig” in the same breath, but these numbers measure two very different things.

Storage: your phone’s wardrobe

Storage (also called ROM or internal memory) is where everything you keep lives:

  • Photos and videos
  • WhatsApp voice notes, statuses and media
  • Apps like TikTok, Telegram and your bank app
  • Downloaded movies and music

When storage is full, you can’t take new pictures or install updates. Common sizes in Ghana today are 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

RAM: your phone’s working table

RAM is the space your phone uses for what you’re doing right now. Picture a trader’s table at Makola: the bigger the table, the more items you can lay out at once without packing some away. More RAM lets you keep WhatsApp, Facebook, MoMo and Google Maps open together without the phone reloading each one. Common sizes are 4GB, 6GB, 8GB and 12GB.

Signs You Need More Storage

  • You regularly get “Storage almost full” warnings
  • You delete photos before every event so you can record new ones
  • WhatsApp won’t download media until you clear space
  • App updates keep failing
  • You run a business on your phone and keep product photos, receipts and customer chats

Ghana reality check: WhatsApp is the biggest storage eater we see. One busy church or market group can quietly fill 10GB in a few months. Many people also download videos on night bundles to watch later, and that needs room too.

Signs You Need More RAM

  • Apps restart when you switch back to them
  • Typing lags or the keyboard freezes
  • Games stutter even on low settings
  • The phone struggles with more than three or four apps open
  • You juggle MoMo, WhatsApp Business and a calculator while serving customers

So Which One Should You Prioritise?

For most Ghanaian buyers, storage runs out first. RAM decides how smooth the phone feels. Storage decides whether you can keep using it at all.

Here’s the simple rule we give customers at Simcel Ventures:

Your useMinimum RAMMinimum storage
Calls, WhatsApp, MoMo4GB64GB (128GB better)
Student / heavy social media6GB128GB
Business owner / trader6–8GB128–256GB
Gaming / content creation8GB+256GB

If your budget forces a choice, 4GB RAM with 128GB storage usually serves an everyday user better than 6GB RAM with 64GB storage.

Can I Fix It Without Buying a New Phone?

Sometimes, yes.

For storage

  • Add a memory card (microSD). Many Samsung A-series, Tecno and Infinix phones support one. The Galaxy A16, for example, takes cards up to 1.5TB, and a card costs far less than a new phone.
  • Turn off WhatsApp auto-download for media in group chats.
  • Back up photos to Google Photos, but do it on Wi-Fi or a night bundle, because it uses data.

For RAM

  • Close apps you aren’t using.
  • Use “Lite” versions of apps where they exist, such as Facebook Lite.
  • Restart your phone every few days.

You can’t add physical RAM to a phone. If RAM is your real problem, an upgrade is the only true fix.

Our Advice From the Shop Floor

Most people who come in saying “my phone is slow” are actually out of storage, because a nearly full phone slows down too. Check Settings > Storage before you decide anything. If it’s above 90% full, start there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does more RAM make my phone faster?

Up to a point. Going from 3GB to 6GB makes a big difference for everyday use. Going from 8GB to 12GB is mostly noticeable for heavy gaming and multitasking.

Does full storage slow down a phone?

Yes. When storage is over about 90% full, phones often become sluggish, apps crash and updates fail. Freeing space can make an old phone feel noticeably quicker.

Is 64GB storage enough in 2026?

For light users, barely. Apps and WhatsApp media keep getting bigger, so we recommend 128GB as the sensible minimum for most buyers.

Can a memory card replace internal storage?

Partly. A memory card is great for photos, videos, music and documents, but most apps still install on internal storage, so don’t go below 64GB internal.
