Samsung Galaxy A17 vs A26: Which Is Better in Ghana?

·

You’ve saved up around GH₵2,000 to GH₵3,500, and you’ve narrowed it down to two Samsung phones: the Galaxy A17 and the Galaxy A26. They look almost the same, both have big 6.7-inch screens, and the shop attendant says “both are good.” So is the A26 worth the extra money, or will the A17 serve you just as well?

Quick Answer: A17 or A26?

If you want the best Samsung for the lowest price, buy the Galaxy A17. If you can stretch your budget by about GH₵1,000, the Galaxy A26 is the better phone. It’s faster, has a smoother screen, and is much tougher against water and dust.

Below, I’ll explain what that extra money actually gets you, so you can decide based on how you use your phone.

Price in Ghana: How Much Are You Paying?

Prices move with the cedi and with stock, but at the time of writing, this is roughly what you’ll pay for brand-new units across Ghanaian shops:

ModelCommon VersionApprox. Price (GHS)
Galaxy A174GB RAM / 128GBGH₵2,000 – GH₵2,300
Galaxy A178GB RAM / 256GBAround GH₵3,000
Galaxy A266GB RAM / 128GBGH₵3,050 – GH₵3,400
Galaxy A268GB RAM / 256GBAround GH₵3,600

Shop owner’s tip: There is also a 4G version of the A17 with a different processor. Always ask whether the unit is the 5G version before you pay, and confirm the RAM and storage on the box.

Where the A26 Is Better

1. Speed and Performance

The A26 runs on Samsung’s Exynos 1380 chip, while the A17 uses the Exynos 1330. In daily use, the A26 opens apps faster, switches between WhatsApp, MoMo and TikTok more smoothly, and handles games like Free Fire or eFootball better.

If you’re a trader running WhatsApp Business, Instagram and your MoMo app all day, the A26 will feel less sluggish after a year of use.

2. Smoother Screen

Both phones have a sharp 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which looks great for YouTube, football highlights and movies. The difference is the refresh rate: the A26 has 120Hz while the A17 has 90Hz. The A26 feels noticeably smoother when scrolling. The A17 is still very good, just not as silky.

3. Water and Dust Protection

This is the big one for Ghana. The A26 is rated IP67, meaning it can survive dust and being dropped in water (up to 1 metre for about 30 minutes). The A17 is only IP54, which covers dust and light splashes.

Think about the harmattan dust, rainy-season downpours, market stalls, and phones falling into buckets. The A26 can take more punishment. Its screen also uses tougher Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+.

4. Slightly Better Camera

Both have a 50MP main camera and a 13MP selfie camera, so your everyday photos and selfies will look similar. The A26 has a better ultra-wide lens (8MP vs 5MP), which helps with group photos at weddings, church programmes and outdoor events.

Where the A17 Wins

1. Price

The A17 saves you roughly GH₵1,000. That money can buy a good power bank, original charger, case, screen protector and still leave change for data bundles.

2. Lighter in the Hand

The A17 is slightly lighter (about 192g vs 200g) and thinner, which some people prefer for one-hand use.

3. Same Big Battery

Both phones pack a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging. For a normal user, either phone will last a full day. The A26 is a bit quicker to charge, but the difference is small.

What About Dumsor and Charging?

Neither phone comes with a charger in the box, which surprises many buyers. During dumsor, you’ll want to charge quickly when the light comes back. Our advice:

  • Get an original 25W Samsung charger to enjoy fast charging on either phone.
  • Pair it with a 10,000mAh or 20,000mAh power bank. That gives you two to four extra full charges when power is off.
  • Avoid cheap, unbranded chargers. They charge slowly and can damage your battery over time.

Do You Need 5G in Ghana?

Both phones support 5G, but 5G is still rolling out in Ghana and coverage is limited. Today, most people will use 4G on MTN, Telecel or AT. Think of 5G as a bonus that keeps your phone ready for the future, not a reason to choose one model over the other.

So, Who Should Buy Which?

Choose the Galaxy A17 if you:

  • Are a student or first-time Samsung buyer on a tight budget
  • Mainly use WhatsApp, Facebook, calls and MoMo
  • Want a reliable Samsung without spending over GH₵2,300

Choose the Galaxy A26 if you:

  • Run your business from your phone all day
  • Play games or multitask heavily
  • Work outdoors, in markets, or around water and dust
  • Want a phone that will still feel fast in two or three years
