So you’ve finally saved up and gotten yourself a new phone — maybe a Tecno Spark or a Samsung Galaxy A-series — and now you’re staring at your old phone wondering how all your contacts, photos, and WhatsApp chats are going to survive the move. Relax. You don’t need to lose a single number or that old picture of your graduation. Here’s exactly how to do it, step by step, without burning through your MTN or Telecel data bundle.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
A lot of customers who walk into our shop have lost contacts before because they just took out the old SIM, put it in the new phone, and hoped for the best. That works for phone numbers saved on the SIM card, but it does nothing for your WhatsApp chats, your MoMo transaction screenshots, your photos, or contacts saved directly on the phone’s memory. If you’re switching from an old Android to a new Tecno or Samsung, you need a proper transfer method — not guesswork.
Step 1: Back Up Your Contacts First
Before anything else, back up your contacts to your Google account.
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Google
- Make sure “Contacts” sync is switched on
- Once it syncs, those same contacts will appear automatically when you sign into the same Google account on your new phone
This is the safest method because even if your old phone gets spoiled, stolen, or dies on you (which happens more often than we’d like in this heat), your contacts are sitting safely online.
If You Don’t Have Strong Data at Home
We understand — not everyone has steady Wi-Fi, and burning 2GB just to back up contacts feels like a waste. Good news: contact syncing uses very little data, usually under 5MB unless you have thousands of saved numbers. You can do it on a small data bundle at a filling station or while charging your phone at a friend’s shop with Wi-Fi.
Step 2: Move Your Photos and Videos
For photos and videos, you have three solid options depending on your situation:
1. Google Photos (Best for online backup) Turn on backup in the Google Photos app, and everything uploads automatically. Great if you have decent data, but it can eat your bundle fast if you have thousands of pictures — so do this on Wi-Fi where possible.
2. Phone Clone Apps (Best for offline transfer) Both Tecno and Samsung phones come with built-in “Phone Clone” apps that transfer everything — photos, videos, apps, contacts, even WhatsApp in some cases — directly from old phone to new phone over a local wireless connection. No data bundle needed, no internet required. This is honestly the fastest method and what we recommend to most customers who buy from us in-store.
3. Memory Card or USB Cable Old-school but reliable, especially if your old phone still has a memory card slot. Move the files onto the SD card, then insert it into the new phone (if it supports one) or transfer via a USB-C to USB-C cable.
Step 3: Transfer WhatsApp Chats
This is the one that stresses people the most, but it’s simple:
- On your old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, and back up to Google Drive
- On your new phone, install WhatsApp using the same phone number
- When prompted, tap “Restore” to pull your chat history from Google Drive
Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi or have enough data before restoring — WhatsApp backups can be a few hundred MB if you have a lot of chat history and shared images.
Step 4: Don’t Forget Your MoMo and Banking Apps
A lot of people forget this until it’s too late. Your MTN MoMo, Vodafone Cash, or AirtelTigo Money app is tied to your SIM and registered line — reinstalling it on your new phone and logging in with your PIN usually restores access, but if you ever get stuck, visit your network’s service center with your ID rather than trying to force it. Don’t ever share your MoMo PIN with anyone claiming to “help” you transfer data, including shop attendants. A genuine phone dealer will never ask for it.
A Quick Word on Power and Timing
If you’re doing a full phone clone transfer, make sure both phones are charged above 50% before you start — nothing worse than a transfer getting cut halfway because of dumsor or a dead battery mid-process. If you’re at our shop doing an in-store swap, we always advise customers to bring their charger along, just in case.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I lose my WhatsApp messages when I change phones?
Not if you back up to Google Drive first. As long as you back up before switching and restore using the same phone number on your new device, your chat history transfers over.
Can I transfer data without using the internet? Yes. Tecno and Samsung phones both have a built-in Phone Clone feature that transfers contacts, photos, and apps directly between two phones over a local connection — no data bundle required.
Will switching phones affect my MTN MoMo or Vodafone Cash account?
No, your mobile money account is tied to your SIM and registered number, not your phone. Just reinstall the app on your new phone and log in with your PIN.
How long does a full phone-to-phone transfer take?
It depends on how much data you have. A phone clone transfer with average photos, contacts, and apps usually takes between 15 to 40 minutes. Larger media libraries can take longer.
