In a significant step towards modernizing Ghana’s public transport system, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has unveiled Tap and Go, a digital service aimed at revolutionizing how citizens commute. The launch event took place on Monday, February 19, at the Head Office of Metro Mass Limited in Accra, where the system was inaugurated for intra and inter-city public transport services.
Tap and Go introduces a digital platform offering various functionalities, including a prepaid card for cashless fare payments and a virtual card accessible through a mobile app. This innovation streamlines the ticketing process by allowing passengers to simply tap their cards or phones on fixed machines aboard buses or trains.
During the launch, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing longstanding challenges in the public transport sector, such as delays, corruption, and safety concerns. He underscored Tap and Go’s role in enhancing efficiency, combating corruption, and formalizing the informal transport sector through cutting-edge technology.
Highlighting the scope of the initiative, Dr. Bawumia outlined plans to integrate various transport services, including trotros, loading taxis, and call-on-demand services, into the Tap and Go ecosystem. This unified approach aims to provide a seamless experience for commuters while fostering transparency and accountability across the transport network.
Crucially, the Vice President emphasized that Tap and Go represents a significant advancement over previous initiatives, offering expanded features and broader applicability beyond individual bus services. Developed by local talents in Ghana, the platform reflects the country’s growing expertise in leveraging technology to address societal challenges.
Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism that Tap and Go would lead to tangible improvements, including reduced corruption, enhanced revenue management, and streamlined operations for public transport agencies like Metro Mass Transport Service. He called upon stakeholders in the transport sector to embrace this transformative initiative, emphasizing the collective effort required to realize a future where transportation is safe, efficient, and accessible to all.
The launch of Tap and Go marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s digital transformation journey, signaling the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for the betterment of public services and the welfare of its citizens.
