The word “AKATSI” literally means “You would swear to leave and remain”. “AKA” means to “swear to do something” and “TSI” means to “To Remain”.
And it goes with the appellation “Akatsi Akaya, ne eka doko na tsi”. And this is translated as “If you swear to leave you would remain, your swearing would be in vain and you would remain”.

Now let me explain how AKATSI got its name.
The main Akatsi township used to be called “Mornenu” which translates as “4 Junction”. Akatsi was therefore and still remains a town at a 4 Junction in the middle of Southern Volta.

To the West are towns like Torve, Agbakope, Dabala, Sogakope, Sokpoe etc!
To the East are towns like Tadzewu, Dzodze!
To the North are towns like Wute, Ziope leading to Kpetoe and Ho!
To the south is Abor, Anyako, Avenorpeme, Agbozume, Keta, Denu, Aflao etc.

The story goes that “Mornenu”(4 Junction) used to be a meeting market place for Traders who came from towns and villages on all the four roads to buy and sell or do batter trade with their goods and services.
Nobody actually stayed at the 4 Junction and People would just come do business and go back to their hometowns. But then with time people begun to stay a little longer in town for days after their business was over and they kept promising and swearing to leave the next day but then that next day to leave never came.
And they kept postponing their date of departure when people asked when they would leave and they all eventually settled in town.

So this behavior of people coming to do business in town and swearing to go back to their hometowns but then eventually remaining and building a family in Akatsi is what gave the town it’s name.
(AKATSI) as I said means “You would swear to leave but then you would eventually remain)

And trust me when I tell you that you cannot visit Akatsi, mingle with the People and be able to leave at your scheduled time. You would surely want to spend one last day, and another last day and before you know you’ve already found a fine woman to marry and a nice place to build.

Akatsi is therefore renowned for its hospitality and Entertainment lifestyle which easily gets Visitors to fall completely in love with the town. And you would fall in love anyday you mingle with the YOUTHS of Akatsi.
