Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp” (Judges 7:14).
It is the means it pleased God to use to reassure His servant that is so arresting. Here was this vast invading army, like locusts for multitude, and Gideon had been instructed progressively to disband his own forces. It seemed absurd to expect the three hundred that remained to overthrow this Midianite host, and Gideon seems to have had no assurance regarding the issue.
It was in this state of uncertainty that he ventured into the enemy camp. Praise God, when we have no way out it is always an easy matter for Him to open a way. That little band of men was indeed to be His instrument for the deliverance of His people, and His servant, in his own dilemma, was to hear the assuring news in the way most calculated to stir his faith, namely from the prophetic lips of one of his foes.
Fear, he learned, had already struck them. No wonder he worshiped. Amen!!!
